Built in the 1750's, the Melville House is located in the heart of the Newport's Historic Hill District on gaslit Clarke Street, one of the quietest streets in Newport. Surrounded by interesting old colonial buildings, the Melville House is just one block up from Thames Street, where the Brick Market Place and the harbor front are located. There you can find many of the city's finest restaurants, luxurious sailboats, antique shops and galleries. The Melville House is one of the ew inns in Newport dedicated to Colonial style and decorated in the simple tastes of the early colonists. Each morning breakfast is served in a sunny room featuring homemade granola, muffins, and breads as well as buttermilk biscuits, scones, Yankee cornbread, stuffed French toast, fresh fruit, sourdough pancakes, and Rhode Island Johnnycakes. An afternoon coffee and tea is served everyday featuring refreshments including biscotti, and on cold days, a hearty soup is offered. The innkeepers at the Melville House are always available to share their Newport experiences with guests and do whatever they can to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Each room is furnished in a traditional Colonial style and feature many period antiques. All rooms offer air conditioning, bathrobes, a hair dryer, iron/ironing board, and sweets at turndown. **This property requires a two-night minimum stay for all Friday and Saturday arrivals.**   1144199134

39 Clarke Street, Newport, RI - From T.F. Green International Airport: Start out going South on Post Road/US-1 toward Fresno Road. Take the ramp toward I-95. Merge onto Airport Connector Road West. Merge onto I-95 South toward New York. After approximately five miles, merge onto RI-4 South via Exit 9, on the left, toward Newport/South County. Continue for 10 miles. Turn a slight right onto Tower Hill Road/US-1 South. Merge onto RI-138 toward Jamestown/Newport/Bridges (portions toll) and continue for approximately nine miles. Take the RI-238 South ramp toward Scenic Newport. Turn right onto RI-138A/RI-238/JT Connell Highway. Continue to follow RI-138A/RI-238. Stay straight to go onto Farewell Street. Make a slight right turn onto Thames Street. Turn left onto Touro Street. Turn right onto Clarke Street and continue for less than 1/10 mile to the property.
